Bigham Takes First in H.S. Judo
Summer 1998

It was a busy week for Naperville resident Matt Bigham. On March 19, the Waubonsee Valley High School senior was awarded his first degree black belt in jujitsu. Matt has been a student at MATS for the past four years, and has trained in both DanZan Ryu jujitsu and judo.

On March 21, Matt traveled to the 1998 High School Judo National Championships in Milwaukee, where he placed first in the 90 kilogram division, defeating fighters from around the country. Matt won eight matches with ippon, the full point awarded in judo for throwing an opponent forcefully on the back.

On March 23, Olympic judo champion Jason Morris (silver medal, 1992) visited MATS and awarded him his gold medal.
