Recycling
Cans for Pets
by Susan

Winter
1997
Ever
since the dojo began recycling for ADOPT a few months ago, people have
asked me the following questions: What is ADOPT? How do the recycled
cans help take care of homeless cats and dogs? and Can we recycle glass
and plastic bottles?
ADOPT is Animals
Deserving Of Proper Treatment, an all-volunteer, no-kill, nonprofit
cat and dog rescue group. Incorporated in 1989, the group uses donations
to fund grooming, boarding, and veterinary bills for rescued pets. Any
remaining funds go toward building a permanent animal shelter. Animals
are currently kept in private foster homes and are brought on Sundays
to Boulder Terrace Animal Hospital in Naperville, where they can be
viewed for adoption.
ADOPT raises some
of the funds it needs by selling cans to a recycler. Their average yield
is $80 per week, or $4,160 annually, depending on whether cans are crushed
or whole. Martial Arts Training Service's aikido, judo, jujitsu, and
martial tots classes have donated 16 garbage bags full of cans since
July. Some members have even begun bringing in cans from home.
Glass and plastic
bottles are not purchased by the recycler. Anyone wishing to begin a
glass and plastic recycle effort, please speak to Maureen or John. Most
cities will accept the materials for free.
